September 2023
We completed an exciting pilot project with Van Heron Labs, Inc. We tested how the two culture supplements formulated by their innovative approach affect the proliferation and differentiation of human T cells cultured in vitro. The team presented the results at the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy North American Meeting, Houston, TX. We look forward to our continued contribution to effective T-cell manufacturing.

Kyung-Ho attended another Wellcome LEAP HOPE PI meeting on the beautiful UBC campus in Vancouver, Canada. As usual, we had great discussions and conversations, which further inspired all who attended. Thank you, the hosting team at UBC, and thank you Program Directors!

We are excited to share that our team has been selected to get awarded from Wellcome LEAP HOPE fund. With 50+ teams of PIs and Co-PIs, we will work together to advance stem cells, immune cells, organoids, and whole organ systems and their connections that mimic human physiology in vitro.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that Kyung-Ho is awarded for the Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award. The CAREER Award is the foundation's most prestigious honor for junior faculty members who exemplified the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. The Award supports our proposal, “CAREER: An Immunoengineering Approach to Create PurelySynthetic Microenvironments Enabling Generation of Antigen-Specific Effector B cells” for a five-year period from 2020 through 2025. Thank you, NSF, all our supporters, mentors, collaborators, and friends! We will certainly keep up the great work that we have started!

Kyung-Ho and Hector attended the AIChE Annual Conference at Orlando, FL. Kyung-Ho served as a co-chair for the Biomaterials for Immunological Applications session. Hector presented his MS thesis research at UAH that has been recently published in Biomacromolecules as well (Check out the details in Publications). The updated data from Lauren's research was presented by Kyung-Ho. We met Dr. Lei and Dr. Torres Diaz from the department and had a good time together!

A very talented high school student, Priya Chennupati, started her Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP) summer research. For the next 6 weeks, she will be mentored by Dr. Roh and Armin to carry out an exciting project using phage display technology. Welcome Priya!

Our group started an exciting research collaboration with the Refuge Biotechnologies, Inc. (Menlo Park, CA). With this collaboration, we will develop a fundamental engineering platform that could impact on the standardization of T cell therapeutics.
We had a group lunch in celebration of Hector and Lauren's successful defense! Great job and congratulations!!!

Aaron Sears has left our lab to pursue his passion for healthcare IT business. He has accepted a job as an Engineer at Epic Systems Corp. located in Madison, WI. It is a great loss for the lab but we wish you all the best in your new career!
We hosted the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Summer Program students as a participating laboratory. Following Kyung-Ho's lecture, Abhinav, Hector, and Joowon demonstrated the principles and practices of flow cytometry.
